My Summer Law Clerk Experience

Shelby Clinging • Sep 02, 2021

My time here at Schmiedeskamp Robertson Neu and Mitchell LLP has expanded my knowledge not only of the law itself, but also of what it is like to work within the legal field. I have been able to gain experience in estate and probate, medical malpractice, bankruptcy, business, trademark, litigation, and even a little bit of criminal law. I have had the opportunity to help draft numerous documents including motions, petitions, answers to complaints, and easement grants. My favorite documents to draft are motions to dismiss and petitions to the court. As for my favorite field of law, I simply cannot decide.

When I first started my law school journey, I truly had no idea what kind of law I wanted to practice. When it came to deciding where I wanted to work this summer, I knew I wanted to find a place where I could explore different types of law. I am very grateful to Schmiedeskamp for giving me the opportunity to do just that. Because of the opportunities provided to me by Schmiedeskamp, I have discovered that I do not like bankruptcy law, nor am I as fond of estate and probate law as I had expected to be. But, without my experience at Schmiedeskamp I would not have discovered how much I enjoy litigation, medical malpractice, and business law. Watching Jim Hansen and Dan McCleery dominate in the medical malpractice area has inspired me to become as great as them one day. Not to mention being able to witness the passion Jim Rapp, Delmer Mitchell, and all the attorneys at Schmiedeskamp have for the legal profession.

What I’ve enjoyed most (second only to learning so much) is the environment I have been able to work in. During my time this summer, I never met an attorney or staff member who wasn’t kind and encouraging. If I had any questions, I knew I would be able to ask anyone, and they would be willing to help me. Everyone was patient and willing to teach me things that I didn’t know. I learned just as much working with Schmiedeskamp as I did my first year of law school! I truly believe I have gained friendships and connections that will last a lifetime.

I was born and raised just outside of Quincy and have always called Adams County home, so, being able to return this summer and learn so much about the county and its citizens has been very special to me. When I left for law school, I did not think that I would want or be able to return home and practice law. However, my experience this summer has drastically changed my view. After graduation, I hope to be able to return to Adams County and continue to call it home.

I am extremely grateful for all my experiences this summer with Schmiedeskamp. I could not have asked for a better firm to support me in my law school journey and aid in my growing knowledge of the law.
