In Your 30s? Why You Need a Will Right Now

Chase Rehrig • Sep 30, 2021

The 30s are often consumed by establishing one’s career, family, new friend groups, etc. It is a middle ground with the challenges of the late teen and 20s years behind but processing middle-aged and retirement ahead. It is also an age where you need to make major decisions, including those related to a will. There are several reasons why you need a will in your 30s. Read on so that you can gain a fuller understanding of what a will is, how it enforces your wishes, and why you need one.

What Is a Will and Why You Need a Will

A will is a document through which you say how your property and assets will be distributed at the time of your death. Without a will, your state’s laws, rather than you, decide who gets your belonging when you die.

When Do You Need a Will?

You need a will when you reach adulthood. No family member, partner, best friend, or parents can automatically determine your wishes and carry them out once you are gone without one. It is your responsibility to formulate a will that will enable an executor of your choice to manage your assets with the least amount of stress, conflict, and uncertainty for those you love. This is done via your properly executed will.

Only in your 30s? You Still Need a Will Now

For many people at your age, friends, partners, charitable organizations, and even pets are incredibly important. But no matter how much you would like to help or look after them if you pass away, your assets will not go to them unless you have a will. In most states, assets go first to spouses, children, and parents.

Also, life moves quickly. In your 30s, you may find yourself moving from a struggling single to a financially stable person with assets, with a significant other, and perhaps children. A will can consider those possibilities and plan for them. Your experienced lawyer can also quickly update your will as your circumstances change.

So take care of business now and plan for the future. At 30, you do this in part by getting a will.

How Do You Get a Will?

Let’s start with what you should not do. Do not go online and fill out a template to create your will. That may seem like an easy shortcut, but it is a risky one. Templates are not always up to date, nor can they ever evaluate your specific circumstances to determine what your will should look like.

Instead, contact a reputable law firm that specializes in wills and estate planning and meet with them regarding your need for a will. They will speak with you, help determine what your wishes are for when you pass away, and create a valid will accordingly.
